Wow, what a powerhouse Lou Smith was! His American Dream Program took us all on a journey through American history, politics, culture, identity, debate, introspection and adventure we’ll never forget. It was Dewey at its finest, it was truly experiential—every day! It embodied the entire philosophy of John Dewey himself. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher/advisor/mentor/inspirer/hero at an age when we really needed one, the perfect teacher for the perfect time in our lives—Mr. Smith, you made us think, you are us question and you challenged us to be our best selves. Lessons about our history and how they affected who we’ve become now, and what it truly means to be an American. Thank you, Mr. Smith, may your memory be a blessing.

So sorry for your loss Jan, and family.  I was honored that Lew allowed me to to be a  part of his visionary Principal's Leadership Institute and National School Change Award screening panel.   I am thankful to have been in the company  of such a passionate educator.

"AMDEM".  I had that code on my schedule for 5 cycles.  Mr. Smith took us on a bus ride all the way to New Hampshire for a student exchange week.  He jumped on desks, his enthusiasm for his students, and his craft, was that great.  He taught us to be independent thinkers.  He had great guest speakers, including the Most Honorable RBG, and she spoke to us about the fight for women's rights, civil liberties.  He had WILD, uncontrollable hair.  He was always pulling his pants up by the belt.  Smoothing down his facial hair.  His passion for teaching, for knowledge, flew out of his madly gesticulating fingers like lightning.  He was inspiring, and will be missed.

Lewis Smith was my teacher at John Dewey HS. He was more than a teacher he was a great friend, mentor and an overall great person. I offer my condolences to the Smith Family and say his time on earth was put to great use as he was one of a kind.

Lew, Lew, Lew....Where to begin. You were a force. Whenever you had an idea in your head, it was go time! Full steam ahead, nothing could stop your drive, motivation and energy. You would change the world with one plan, one light bulb that went off in your mind. Your tenacity, ferver, and fearless approach to life will be missed. May you forever be in the hearts and minds of those who hold you most dear.

I worked with Lew when we taught at Fordham. He was always smiling, hard working, and one of the nicest, kindest persons I've ever met. He was always encouraging and happy. And a HUGE Dodger fan. He will be missed. My condolences to Jan and family over your loss. I will keep Lew and your family in my prayers.
