Kathleen Murray, age 70, of New York, NY, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023. She is survived by her loving husband Chris Lowden, her sisters Patty Murray Meekins (DJ) and Lori Flood (Kevin), her brother Thomas Murray Jr. (Tricia), and by many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. Kathy was a devoted wife and a sincere and valued friend to many, and will be sorely missed.
She was born in The Bronx and grew up in Garden City. She was a National Honor Society graduate of Maria Regina High School, and attended Binghamton University School of Nursing. She started her nursing career at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, and then at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village, where she lived for almost 40 years. She strongly supported women’s rights, and helped organize the nurses’ union while working at St. Vincent’s. She first met her husband Chris in 1996, and they were married in 2007.
In 1999 she was diagnosed with MS. She bore the many challenges of this disease without complaint, and always conducted herself with grace and dignity.
She continued working despite her illness, and spent the last 16 years of her career as a clinical trainer at The Mount Sinai Hospital, where she received a formal award for her service to the Hospital. She retired in 2011, and moved with her husband to a wheelchair-accessible apartment in the Yorkville area of Manhattan.
She loved going to the beach from an early age, and spent many days out at Jones Beach and other ocean spots with family and friends. Family was very important to her, and she and Chris celebrated many holidays and events surrounded by her siblings, parents, and nephews and nieces. She liked to cook and to entertain friends, and loved to watch movies and read mystery novels.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Walter B. Cooke Funeral Home, 352 East 87th Street, New York, NY 10128.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of America.
