George Francis Meierhofer, Jr., a long time resident of New York City and originally from Succasunna, New Jersey, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023. George was born on November 29, 1961 and celebrated his 62nd birthday several days before his passing. He fought a difficult battle with cancer over several months. May he rest in eternal peace.
George was raised in Succasunna by his loving mother, Irene Meierhofer (née Symborski), and father, George Meierhofer, Sr. He attended the St. Therese School and Roxbury High School, where he shined in various student organizations, including student government and debate. George attended Georgetown University, studying English and Government in the College, and was also a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center. George remained active in the Georgetown alumni network, having served on the Georgetown University Alumni Association Board of Governors and the Alumni Admissions Program Board of Advisors.
George began his career in New York City, at the business litigation department of one of the world’s largest law firms. He later headed the NYC litigation practice of a large Florida-based firm, where he engaged in cases and arbitrations involving securities law and corporate governance matters. George most recently was partner at a law firm with an extensive Northeast practice.
Living in NYC for over thirty-five years, George amassed an encyclopedic knowledge of the city’s best restaurants and cultural attractions. He was known, and will be remembered for, his humor and keen sense of wit, his wisdom, his ready assistance, as well as his unassuming humility. George is survived by his partner, Jinghong Yao, her son, Michael Xu, and a loving network of friends and extended family members.
A funeral service for George will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Walter B. Cooke Funeral Home, 352 East 87th Street, New York, NY 10128, followed by visitation from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A committal service will take place Monday, December 18, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery & Mausoleum, 225 Ridgedale Ave, East Hanover, NJ 07936.
Flowers may be sent to Walter B. Cooke Funeral Home on the day of the service. For those preferring to make a charitable contribution in lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the Humane Society.
