Died peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday, Jan 30 in the presence of loving family . Born 1929 in Waverly, NY, she obtained a BA from Case Western Reserve in 1950 and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from NYU in 1964. She practiced in NYC with academic appointments at multiple institutions and served as Professor and Head of both Child & Adolescent Psychology and Child Psychiatry at Montefiore Hospital . She was on the faculty of the William Alanson White Institute, Karen Horney Clinic and the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and was President of the American Orthopsychiatric Association. The author of several books and numerous papers , she made significant contributions in the field of child and adolescent mental health as a brilliant diagnostician and therapist. She was committed to helping disadvantaged youth.
Carol had many other interests which she pursued with boundless energy and enthusiasm. She nurtured lasting relationships with students, colleagues and friends. She was an avid reader, attended concerts and theatre regularly, played tennis and loved traveling, spending time in Amagansett, being a grandmother and enjoying her cats who provided a constant source of pleasure and companionship. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She lit up the world with her commanding presence, intellect, quick wit and friendliness.
Carol was predeceased by her brother Miller Johnson and her husband , Earl G. Witenberg, MD. She is survived by her step-daughter Susan Fisher (Hugh), step-son William Witenberg, grand-children Ben, Alex and Hugh Fisher, M.J. and Anna Witenberg, 2 nephews and a niece.
