Billy Wayne Smith, age 85, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024 at his home n Speedwell, TN. He was born on January 3, 1939, to the late Alice and Nathan Smith. He grew up in Powell Valley and attended Bollinger School and Powell Valley High School. He was saved at an early age and often professed his faith in Christ. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a young man and was stationed in Japan for most of his Military enlistment.
Billy Wayne befriended many during his lifetime, and especially during his years as State Trooper and Sheriff. He loved his family and friends, including the numerous 4-legged friends and companions he provided a home for and nourished throughout the years. His philosophy was "I can't save the world, but maybe I can save my little corner of it.". Prior to this illness, he was an avid reader of non-fiction books. He loved music, and in later years was most happy and content at his home in Powell Valley.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife of 36 years, Sandy Smith; daughter, Kathy Butcher (Bob), son Bobby Smith; step-son Jamie Campbell; granddaughter Ashley Lambert; grandson Nathan Smith; step grandson Jacob Campbell; sisters-in-law Barbara Noah, Benni Tallman, Mildred Evans, Lynne (Bill) Hill; brothers-in-law Jim Hatfield (Carol), John Wayne Hatfield (Barbara), Mike Hatfield (Sandy) and a host of good friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Billie Hamic and brother-in-law Kelly Hatfield.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 9, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Coffey Funeral Home, New Tazewell, TN with the funeral service to follow 7:00 PM with Reverend John Hatfield and Reverend Clinton Hatfield officiating. A graveside service with Military honors will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Greasy Hollow Cemetery, Speedwell, TN. Music will be provided by Barbara Hatfield and Andy Hatfield. Alan Mayes, Marson Mayes, Dale Mayes, Mike Hatfield, Nathan Smith and Jacob Campbell will serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers: Gerald Wilder, Lynn Treece and Paul Bussell.
