Annie Gilliam was born in Bowden, North Carolina and was the daughter of Ernest and Rossie Blount. Annie was the 7th of 17 children; the last surviving sibling and lived to be 102 years old. She resided in North Carolina until 1936 when she joined her sister Daisy in New Rochelle, NY.
As a young woman, Annie, affectionately known as Annie Roy by her family, enjoyed The Arts. She participated in the New Rochelle Community Dramatic Club, and when encouraged she would recite her poetry even into her last years. She was also
a member of the NR Seam Weavers.
Annie Roy was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church where she accompanied the children’s choir on organ and piano, took part in church garden parties, Easter Recitals, Christmas Programs, and was a member of the Hostess Group.
In 1946, she married Olando Gilliam who predeceased her in 1966 and although she had no children; she loved them and they loved her. She was also quite fond of dogs and would “babysit” for her friend’s pets whenever the opportunity arose. She was also a tremendous fan of game shows, with The Price is Right and Family Feud being two of her favorites. Of all her interests,
Bridge was her passion; and through the years, she was awarded many trophies and continued to play with her Bridge Club even into this year.
Annie remained in New Rochelle until 2000, then moved to Randolph, NJ with her Grand Niece, Debbie. Neighbors marveled at her alertness and ability to manage household/outdoor activities even at 100 years old. She was sharp and inquisitive until the day she died.
Annie is survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Visiting will be Friday at the Bethesda Baptist Church, 71 Lincoln Ave, New Rochelle, NY from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. church service and
interment in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY. Please view her tribute at www.georgetdavis.com.
