Susan Cohen Adler (Sue), born March 26, 1935, passed away September 10, 2023, at the age of 88, at home with her children by her side. She was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Her parents were Pauline Herzfeld Cohen Gross and Dr. Hymen Leon Cohen. She graduated from Isidore Newman School in 1953 and attended Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts, studying primary education. She married Richard Morris Adler in 1956 and they had three children: Laura Adler Palka (John) of Cary, NC, Julie Ann Adler of New Orleans and Lee Richard Adler (Robert Marks) of New Orleans.
Sue was lovingly called “Su-Su” by her four grandchildren, Julian Charles Kappelman, Caroline Kappelman Rafferty (Nigel), Matthew Brian Palka and Richard Joseph Palka, and two great grandchildren, Leo Bruce Rafferty and Rider Pharr Rafferty. She had a nephew and a niece, Hal Lenard Cohen and Penne Cohen Cromeans. Her parents and her brother Charles Joseph Cohen predeceased her, as well as her dear companions, toy poodle Nappy followed by dachshund Patty. Sue’s family is most appreciative of her friendship with Steve Crifasi (Baton Rouge) and the love and care from her caretaker and co-adventurer Martha Rico.
When Sue’s children attended Newman School, she enjoyed participating in their class activities. She enjoyed volunteering with NOMA and the New Orleans Symphony, and served on the Board of the Junior Committee of the Symphony.
Sue enjoyed spending time with family and friends, including many luncheons with her Newman Class of ’53 girlfriends. Growing up Sue enjoyed athletics. Her participation in sports continued in her adult life. In particular she played tennis (Audubon Park women’s tennis champion) and golf. She loved watching and betting on the ponies at her table in the clubhouse at the Fair Grounds. She was a member of Temple Sinai. Sue loved flowers, especially peonies, lilacs and sweet peas, anything blue and figs.
The family also would like to thank the attentive care provided to Sue in the last weeks of her life by Home Care Solutions and Guardian Angel Hospice.
Visitation will be at the Chapel of Temple Sinai, corner of St. Charles and Palmer Avenues on Friday, September 22, 2023, from 12:30 to 1:30, with a memorial service at 1:30. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Louisiana SPCA (1700 Mardi Gras Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70114), Bridge House/Grace House (4150 Earhart Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70125), or the charity of your choice will be appreciated.
