Sidney F. Lewis IV died on Friday, February 5th surrounded by loved ones at the age of 84. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Diana Loveday Lewis of London, England. He is also survived by his children Sid Lewis (Brittany), Karen Wilkins (Bob), Jennifer McKay (Mark), and Rebecca Dupuy (Darren). Sidney—or “Hotdog” as he was called by his grandchildren and then everyone else—is also survived by eight grandchildren; Erica Hazlehurst (Chad), Meg Lewis, Myles Lewis, Emma McKay, Jack Wilkins, Chris Wilkins, Cole McKay, and Bo Wilkins. The last four months of his life were made extra-special by the arrival of his first great grandchild—Lewis “Hughes” Hazlehurst—who, to none of our surprise, Hotdog made giggle for the first time over the Christmas holidays. He was also blessed with three step-grandchildren; McKenna, Cy and Aubrey Tucker. Sidney is survived by his siblings John Lewis, Betty Eckstrom, and Fred Lewis and was predeceased by sister Baylissa Bell and his parents Sidney F. Lewis III and Baylissa Myles Liebman. Sidney loved and was loved by so many. His children’s friends considered him a second father and he had a way of making you feel as if you were the most important person in the room. He earned his Bachelor’s degree and masters work in Civil Engineering from Tulane University where he was also President of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. After a long career as Executive V.P. of Stewart Enterprises and President of Acme Marble and Granite Co., he started his own company, Lewis Mausoleum Development. Sidney was a board member and President of the New Orleans Country Club. He served in many charitable organizations-- long-time volunteer with the United Way and served as President of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater New Orleans. Sidney was also a retired Captain in the US Army. Flying single-engine planes was one of his passions—so much so he recently floated the idea of renewing his pilot’s license. He also loved astronomy, golf, tennis, friends, and mostly his family who will miss him dearly and love him forever. Due to the present Covid situation, we celebrated Sidney’s life in a private family memorial service on Monday, February 8, 2021. The family invites you to share fond memories and condolences online at www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
