Ruth Ann (“Ann”) Markus Gieseler was born on May 27,1938 and passed away on June 27, 2024. She was born and raised in Breese, Illinois, one of eleven children raised by their mother, Frances, after their father, Otto, passed away in 1941. She met her beloved husband, Daniel Joseph Gieseler, Jr., on a vacation to New Orleans and moved to the city when they married in 1960. Ann is survived by Dan; by their children, Jeffrey Markus Gieseler (Maile) and Pamela Gieseler Michiels; and by her grandchildren: Ben, Mary, Sam (Nicole), Sarah (Nick), Michael and Christopher Gieseler and Anna and Peter Michiels, as well as two great- grandchildren, Beau and Palmer Gieseler. She is also survived by her sister Rosemary and brother Tom, and many nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by parents, Otto and Frances Markus; her bothers and sisters - Valeria, Alice, Mary Jane, Anita, Jean, Ralph,Bob and Joe; and by her son-in-law, Rob.
Ann grew to love New Orleans and its culture. She and Dan also spent many happy years at their home is Mississippi, usually surrounded by grandchildren. She was a passionate gardener and remained interested in politics throughout her life. Most of all, she was a woman of great faith, with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Ann persevered in the face of adversity and found joy wherever she looked. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren beyond measure.
We are grateful to Thyra Mitchell and to Noritta Williams, who cared for Ann with tireless compassion, grace and expertise before and through her final illness.
