Capt. Tsien is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Marta Chang Tsien; his brother Lin Sang Tsien; children Fern Tsien Dvorak (Chris), Jennifer Tsien, and Robert Tsien (Juli); and grandchildren Marie Miller, James Miller III, Paul Dvorak, and Isabelle Tsien.
He was born on August 9, 1932 in Chekiang, China and grew up in Taiwan. After graduating from the Maritime University of Taiwan, he worked as a Merchant Marine Captain for a Taiwanese shipping company for 13 years. During his travels, he met his wife Marta in El Salvador, where he would reside for most of his life.
The Tsien family moved from El Salvador to New Orleans in late 1979, where he and Marta established a number of successful businesses. As an accomplished entrepreneur in El Salvador and New Orleans, Capt. Tsien was respected for his honorable character and generosity.
He was also a devoted husband, father and grandfather who valued education and was proud of the academic and career accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. His interests included reading, golfing and travel.
Capt. Tsien established lasting friendships throughout the world, serving for many years as the President of the Overseas Chinese Association in Latin America and as the representative of this organization in Taiwan. For the last eight years, he resided in Taiwan where Marta served as Ambassador of El Salvador to Taiwan.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM on Saturday, February 2, 2019, followed by a funeral service at 2:30 PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans LA 70124. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Interment will be private.
