Nancy R. Haslett, M.D., aged 83 years, died on November 14, 2020, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late William James Haslett and Rose Tillotson Haslett. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her sister Becky Haslett Mullins of Ft. Walton Beach, FL. Dr. Haslett is survived by her beloved wife of 37 years, Willie Irene Platt Love; her niece, Lisa Rose Mullins Spielman and daughter Brittney Rose of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; and her nephew, William Daniel Mullins and wife Jill of Lawrenceville, GA, and their daughter Kristin Mullins Martin of Maine. Dr. Haslett received a B.S. degree from the University of Miami (1959) and her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine (1963), where she was the only woman in her class. Following her internship at George Washington University Hospital, she completed a residency and fellowship in both adult and child psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine (1964-1968). Dr. Haslett then began a residency and fellowship in pediatric neurology as a Special Fellow of the National Institute of Nervous Disease and Blindness at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans (1968-1971).
Over the course of her 50-year career in the metro New Orleans area, Dr. Haslett held several academic positions at LSU School of Medicine: Department of Psychiatry (Clinical Professor); Department of Neurology (Assistant Professor); and Developmental Disability Center for Children (Clinical Services Coordinator, Associate Director, and Children’s Psychiatric Program Administrator). From 1982-1990, Dr, Haslett was the Clinical Director and the Chief Executive Officer of the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital, popularly known as NOAH. She was a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the Tulane University School of Medicine, and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at Xavier University. From 1990-2004, Dr. Haslett was the Medical Director of the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority. In addition to her academic appointments, Dr. Haslett maintained a private practice and was on the medical staff of many hospitals and clinics, among which were Children’s Hospital, Southeast Louisiana State Hospital, River Oaks Hospital, and Coliseum House. She was also a member of numerous professional societies and published many articles in professional journals.
In her personal life, Dr. Haslett was devoted to her wife and her family and to the many causes she championed, especially those in support of children with mental and/or learning disabilities. She had the gift of quiet humor, a wry smile, and a generous spirit. She was a parishioner at Trinity Episcopal Church, New Orleans.
