Mary Rooney Nuttli, age 64, died peacefully at home on January 11, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was a native of New Orleans and a longtime resident of Metairie. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry Rooney and Marylynn Puneky Rooney.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Thomas Gerard Nuttli; children, Thomas G. Nuttli, Jr., Anne N. Martin (Jordan), Emily N. Williams (Jordan), and John N. Nuttli; grandchildren, Isaac Williams, Bridget Martin, and Ellen Martin; brothers John Rooney, Jr. (Frances), James Rooney (Michele), and Robert Rooney (Carol); and a great many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mary’s life revolved around her family and bringing joy to her loved ones through simple acts of care. She treasured her role as wife, mother, and grandmother and was affectionally known as “Meres” by her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing tennis, tutoring math, and cooking, especially her recipes of roast, red beans and rice, and Turci’s meatballs.
She graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans in 1977 and graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in computer science. As a devoted Catholic, Mary’s life was guided by her faith, with a particular devotion to the Blessed Mother. She was a parishioner at St. Catherine of Siena in Metairie and Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church in New Orleans.
The family would like to acknowledge with special thanks the loving care provided to Mary by Dr. Jayne Gurtler and her office staff, and the nurses at the infusion center of East Jefferson General Hospital.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans. On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, a visitation will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Metairie at 10:30am followed by a funeral mass at noon. Interment to follow at All Saints Mausoleum at Lake Lawn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Mary’s Dominican High School or the U.S. Central & Southern Province of the Society of Jesus.
