Mary Geraldine “Jerri” Baggott McHugh passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011. She was 81. Born in New York to the late James E. and Frances Edyk Baggott. Predeceased by her husband of 60 years, John V. McHugh. Loving mother of Janet McHugh Smith-Alexander, Judy McHugh Bazile, and Joanne McHugh Lanaux. Mother-in-law to Dominic J. Bazile II, Paul Lanaux and the late John Alexander. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jay and Johnathan Bazile, Meaghann Smith Clayton, Nathaniel Hand, her cherubs, Kaitlyn and Marigny Lanaux, and a great granddaughter, Anna Claire Clayton.
Jerri was an alumna of the Villa Maria Academy in New York City. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Hunter College and a Masters in Education from Queens College. In addition, she earned her principal’s license from UNO. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in New York. After relocating to New Orleans in 1974, she taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart. She went on to start the preschool program and was the first preschool coordinator developing the original curriculum. In 1978, she opened The Party Basket, New Orleans’ original invitation and party shop, which she owned and operated until its sale in 2009. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, St. Francis Xavier Church and Metairie Country Club.
Jerri was a very creative, energetic and caring person. She loved her family and was a wonderful friend. Her passing is a great loss to her family and the community.
