Marie was born on September 21, 1927 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to first generation Americans, Marion and Lauretta Tortorich (neé DiMaggio). She grew up in a multi-generational house with her older sister, Anna, listening to her grandmother tell stories from the old country, Contessa Entellina, Sicily. She attended and graduated from Ursuline Academy, where she made lifelong friends. Marie was married to John Albert Bannon on April 10, 1948. Together, they raised a family in Metairie and stayed close with her sister and her family.
Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband, John, in 1977. More recently, she mourned the loss of her grandson Kyle Gerard Duncan, her niece, Marion Medo Cardwell and her brother-in-law Dr. Steven O. Medo.
She is survived by her sister Anna Torortich Medo, who just celebrated her 101st birthday, of New Orleans; her daughter Lorraine Bannon Duncan of San Antonio, and her son John Albert Bannon, Jr and his wife Margaret Greco Bannon of Houston; grandchildren Ashley Duncan Bailey, her husband Adam Bailey, Phillip Bannon, his wife Molly Bannon, and Kimberly Gattis, her husband Eric Gattis, and four great grandchildren, Emily Golden, Weston Golden, Allison Gattis, and Adelyn Bannon.
Marie is also survived by her devoted nieces and nephews, Steven O. Medo Jr. and his wife Kathy; Terrence Cardwell; Karen Medo Oertling, and her husband Laurence; Margaret Medo Babin, and her husband Bill; David Medo; and Elizabeth Medo Ricci, and her husband Rick and many grand-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Veronica Brown for the excellent care and friendship she gave to Marie for more than two years. Thanks also to Nancy Evans, Tyra Holmes, Debra Houston, and Jacqueline Griffith-Gills for their care and companionship the last several months.
Services will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, Saturday, July 6, 2024. Visitation will begin at 10:00am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. The Rite of Committal will immediately follow the Mass at Lake Lawn Cemetery.
