Sister Lory Schaff, C.S.J. (formerly Sister Joannes), native and resident of New Orleans, died at home Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the age of 79. Formerly a member of the Sisters of Mercy from 1953, she transferred to the Congregation of St. Joseph in1984 and died in the 57th year of her religious profession. In addition to the members of her religious congregation, she is survived by her brother, Ferdinand J. Schaff, Jr. and his wife, Ursula, of West Monroe, La.; nephews Ferdinand III (Kim) of New Orleans; Karl (Kathy) of West Monroe; Warren (Sandra) of Houston; niece, Janet Travis (Larry) of Los Angeles; and nine great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand Jacob Schaff and Sarah Lory Schaff of New Orleans.
A graduate of Holy Name High School, she earned a BS degree from Webster College in St. Louis and MA degrees from University of Notre Dame in South Bend and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. An educator, she taught at Mercy Academy in New Orleans, St. Patrick School in Walnut, KS, Mercy College in St. Louis, and Trinity High School in Hutchinson, KS. She was Director of Religious Education at St. Alphonsus Parish in New Orleans, and co-founder of Hope House in New Orleans. She co-founded and taught at St. Paul Adult Learning Center in Baton Rouge from 1983-2006, at which time she returned to New Orleans where she co-founded and taught at St. Vincent de Paul Adult Learning Center until her death.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 7 PM at St. Raymond/St. Leo the Great Church, 2926 Paris Ave. Visitation from 6:30 PM to 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial in Baton Rouge, Saturday, January 28, 2012 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 3912 Gus Young Ave. at 1:30 PM, with visitation beginning at 1 PM. Burial in Roselawn Cemetery, 4045 North St., Baton Rouge.
