Keith grew up in Old Metairie. He graduated from Metairie Park Country Day continuing on to Tulane University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1962. At Tulane he was an intramural athlete, member of the sailing team, and President of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity; most importantly, Keith met Barbara, his beloved wife of 59 years. The energetic couple were just as comfortable gracing the dance floor as they were exploring the open road on his Harley Davidson.
In 1972, Keith joined Marrero Land & Improvement Association, initially as Treasurer and Director of Leasing, then as Executive Vice President from 1981 until his retirement four months short of his 80th birthday in 2019. At Marrero Land, Keith made a positive impact on the Company, its clients, and developments such as the TPC of Louisiana, and Plantation, Stonebridge, Barkley, and Segnette Estates. He actively served the community as chairman of the New Orleans River Region Chamber of Commerce, president of the Home Builders Association of New Orleans and president of the Office Building Association of Greater New Orleans.
Keith enjoyed a life of adventure with his family, especially in Pass Christian, Mississippi, sailing his Hobie Cat, kayaking, and teaching generations of Hammetts and their friends how to sail and waterski. Keith enjoyed bicycle riding, snow skiing, and playing tennis with friends and family at the Metairie Country Club. He was a Harley enthusiast, and on his epic motorcycle rides Keith met people from all over the country and every walk of life. Keith never met a stranger. He loved life and people and they loved him back.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents, Marie Dolores Marrero Hammett and Louis Nicholas Hammett, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Barry Hammett; three children, Keith Marrero Hammett, Jr. (Lara), Ann Larkin Hammett, and Wade Barry Hammett (Emily); four beloved grandchildren, Charles Parker and Collin Wade Neece, John “Jack” Crowell and Kathryn “Kate” Tapia Hammett; his brother Louis Nicholas Hammett, Jr. (Carol Sue), sister, Lynne Hammett Travers (Robert); and numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Keith’s family is grateful for the care he was given by Mr. Charles Oliver and the staff at the Peristyle Old Metairie Gardens 2.
