The family of Jason O. Hamrick, 48 of Kenner, are saddened to announce his sudden passing on June 28, 2023 from a cardiac event. This loss was completely unexpected, leaving family and friends shocked and deeply pained. He will be truly missed in so many ways.
Jason was born in 1974 to George T. and Virginia M. Hamrick in Atlanta, GA, and soon after the family moved to the New Orleans area. Jason attended Alfred Bonnabel High School (1992) and was a passionate baseball player as he earned his spot on the All-Metro and All-State teams over several years. After graduating, he attended Spring Hill College in Mobile for a short period. Jason was invited to try out for the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates farm team in Plant City, FL. Although Jason did great, right handed, 90 mile fastball pitchers were a dime a dozen. God had other plans for Jason which he accepted head on.
Jason started playing baseball at an early age at Wentwood & Woodlake Playgrounds. He excelled throughout the years and made numerous appearances in State, Regional and World Series Championships. He and his friends played together for many years; it was a brotherhood. That passion carried over into his adult years as he got into coaching football, wrestling and of course, baseball for his sons. He coached at his favorite playgrounds, Crescent City, John Curtis, De La Salle and Jesuit high schools. He had a passion for coaching and his boys “loved” Coach Ham. He spoke highly of Jesuit and what it stood for never previously knowing the power of Blue and the Blue Jay spirit. He was immediately accepted as if he was family from the very beginning. He understood very quickly exactly what it meant to be part of the Blue Jay family and knew this was a special place for him and youngest son, Nathan.
Jason was a sports fanatic and even more so when playing with his children and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors, camping and vacationing with the family; he was “Mister Entertainer” when it came to BBQs, seafood boils and family gatherings. Jason lived life to the fullest and made everyone feel like family with his infectious spirit, as he never met a stranger. He had a huge heart and magnetic personality, making him friends to many as he touched so many lives. His friends describe Jason as nothing but kind, loving, caring, big-hearted and just awesome. In his last selfless act on earth, Jason will touch countless others and forever impact and improve their quality of life through his gift of life as an organ/tissue donor.
Jason was a loving and dedicated husband to Theresa of 20 years; she was his everything. When Theresa was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in 2022, Jason stepped in as caretaker for her as she continued her treatment, tending to all her needs without hesitation. Jason was the father to his four sons, Cody, twins Eric (Samantha Prado) and Ryan (Bri Paz), and his caboose, Nathan. Jason is also survived by his mother Virginia Hamrick; siblings George Hamrick (Gina), Ken Hamrick (Michelle), and Stephanie Braun (Chris); step-siblings Sandra Lee Schmidt and Scott Schoenick (Colleen); grandchildren Kaleb and Kai; parents-in-law Gary and Susan Boye; brothers-in-law Chris Boye (Darcey), Sean Boye (Melissa) and Stephen Boye; and nieces and nephews Victoria Holmes (Alex), Zachary Schmidt, Lauren Miller (Scott), Christopher Braun (Miranda), Xavier Simpson (Victoria), Marques Hamrick, and Allison, Preston and Elliot Boye.
Jason was preceded in death by father George T. Hamrick; step-mother Lane Hamrick; grandparents Hugh Patrick and Ruth Natalie Downey, and Jarvis and Omelia Hamrick; grandparents-in-law Willis and Marilyn Boye and Raymond Simoneaux; nephew Tyler Schmidt; and numerous aunts and uncles.
The family would like to thank all for the support, love and prayers given, especially by the Jesuit High School Community. Words cannot express the gratitude and outpouring felt from the Blue Jay Family. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 11:30am until 1:30pm at the Jesuit Chapel. A Mass will be celebrated at 1:30pm, officiated by Fr. John Brown, S.J. Interment will be private. A celebratory reception will follow in Ignatius Hall on campus. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jesuit High School, 4133 Banks Street, New Orleans, LA 70119.
