Jan Blattner Reuther passed away at the age of 66 on October 12, 2021. She had a uniquely quick wit, a contagious smile, and an infectious laugh. Everyone who came into her life was touched by her bright smile and nurturing attitude, making everyone around her feel as if she was their honorary mom. To her family she was a bright light of strength, unity, and support.
She was born on August 30, 1955 in New Orleans, LA. She attended St. Mary’s Dominican High School and graduated with the class of ’73. She furthered her education at the University of New Orleans, where she earned her B.S. in Mathematics and Geology in 1977. Upon graduating, she began her career as a geophysicist with Amoco Exploration Company in New Orleans, where she worked for several years before venturing with smaller contract exploration firms before her retirement. The next phase of her life was spent in full-time, loving devotion to her family. It was in 2002, however, that she came to rejoin the workforce as a Laboratory Technician with Eurofins Central Analytical Laboratories, work which continued until her retirement in 2020. Throughout her career, she was beloved by her coworkers and considered to be kind-spirited and caring all around. Jan was a member of St. Dominic Church and had served as the coordinator for the Parish Ministry of Altar Servers for several years, where she trained children for serving. She had lifelong passions for family, gardening, and watching both local college and professional sports. She spent her most recent years with her husband in their home on Bayou St. John, where she enjoyed many visits with her family, working in her garden, and appreciating nature and the wildlife that frequented her lawn. Most of all, she enjoyed seeing sunsets on the dock. Her caring, welcoming, and giving spirit to her coworkers, neighbors, and children’s friends will be remembered and greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by: her parents, Blanche Tujague Blattner and Frederick Ernst Blattner, Jr. She is survived by: her husband of 42 years, John Mitchell Reuther; her daughter, Julie Reuther Crowl (Matthew); her sons, Jeffrey Matthew Reuther (Elizabeth), Jeremy Michael Reuther (Katherine), Joseph Mitchell Reuther, and James Mitchell Reuther; her sister, Kathleen Blattner Gapsis; her brother, Michael Blattner (Sharon); and her grandchildren, George Porter Crowl, Genevieve Grace Crowl, Charles Fitzgerald Reuther, Julia Flannery Reuther, and Michael Ignatius Reuther.
