Irene Pater Berger passed away at home surrounded by her family on February 5, 2023, at the age of 103. She was born on July 28, 1919, in Dracut, Massachusetts, to the late Hypolit Pater and Katarzyna Wisenowski Pater. She worked as an administrative assistant in Arizona state service. She loved gardening and traveling; was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Church and the Hilltoppers. For her service with the church, she received an Eddy Award and an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis on her 100th birthday.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Alfred J. Berger; her parents; her sisters, Olga Przybyla, Helen McCarthy, and Jane Pulaski; and her brothers, Alexander Pater and Chester Pater.
She is survived by her daughters, Irene Hebert (Joseph) and Mary Martin (James); her son, Robert Berger (Petra); her grandchildren, John Hebert (Kelly), Cherie Monaghan (Eddie), David Martin (Jen), Michelle Martin, Eric Berger (Amber), Brian Berger (Emy), and Lisa McGowan (Matthew); and her great-grandchildren, Candace Shine (Matthew), Corinne Faucheux (Michael), Jessica Thibodeaux (Garrett), Justin Monaghan, Conner Martin, Dylan Martin, Zephyr Martin, Brycen Berger, Jackson Berger, and Levi McGowan; and her step-great grandson, Ethan Eckstrand.
The family would like to give special thanks to Notre Dame Hospice, Deborah Chapman RN, AnnMarie Chedville, and Irene’s caregivers Karen Sterling, Nicole Joseph, and Wilkie Stovall.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home at 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana. An 11:00 a.m. mass will immediately follow visitation, with Fr. Cletus Orji officiating.
