Harold “Smitty” Smith was born on November 7, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was a resident of Harahan since 1959. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War at which time he served with the occupational forces in Japan from November 1948 until August 1950 with the first Calvary Division, Fifth Calvary regiment. In 1950, he served in Korea until September 1951.
Harold married Hilda Schneider on April 19, 1954. He supported his family from his career with Royal Typewriter Co. He retired at age 65 and went on to do extensive typewriter repair work part time.
He was a lifetime member of the following veteran’s organizations: Jefferson Parish V.F.W., Post 3267; American Legion, Post Harahan-River Ridge 397, where he served as adjutant and Commander; and Voiture 1616 of the 40/8 Society. Additionally, he was the president of AARP Chapter 4594 in Harahan, Louisiana.
Father of Guy W. Smith, Sr. (Celeste), Stephanie Smith McGovern (Kenneth), and Daniel P. Smith. Grandfather of Joshua Smith (Melissa), Guy Smith, Jr., Jessica Smith (Paige), Darryl McGovern, Brandi Smith Cooper (Jessie), Erin McGovern, and the late Angie McGovern. Great grandfather of Jarret Cooper, Zoey Smith, and Carlee Cooper; and step great grandchildren, Ryland Nobles, Brayden Nobles, and Alison Nobles. Son of the late Alvina Smithe. Brother of the late Jimmy Smithe (Joyce). Nephew of the late Nola Irvine.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 1 PM. Visitation will begin at 11 AM. After the Mass, Harold will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
