Strengthened by the Catholic Sacraments and the love of family and friends … Frances Foley passed into eternity on August 17, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband Raphael (Ray) Foley Sr., her parents Leander and Lucille Bartling, and her brothers Carl and Stanley (childhood death). She is survived by her children Mary Lou (Barry) Bouvier, Rafe (Therese) Foley, Patricia (the late Dan) Martel, Catherine (Dennis) Kalob; her grandchildren Elizabeth (Jimmy), Katie (Tony), Vince (Lynne), Greg, Chris, Aislinn, Brigid, Patrick; her great-grandchildren Austen, Sarah, Michael, Stephen, Emma, Andrew, Ada; her niece Rebecca Milliman (and Rebecca’s children Karl, Matthew, Jacob and Rachel).
Frances grew up in uptown New Orleans and attended Saint Stephen’s High School on Napoleon Ave. After high school she worked as a bookkeeper which reflected her life-long enjoyment of Math and of keeping the family checkbook in good balance. After marriage and the start of a family, Frances and Ray journeyed to a new home in Terrytown which became the center of family events for over 50 years. Frances took diligent care of her family - especially of Ray during their 68 years of marriage. She was a hard worker with a strong sense of duty.
Frances served Christ the King School for about 40 years as a Religion teacher, sponsor of the Mission Club, and coordinator of the after-care program. The Mission Club members sponsored monthly bingos for the elderly residents of Mary Joseph, brought them cards and treats for the holidays and would visit with the residents. Many Mission Club members will remember making beds and sandwiches at Ozanam Inn and then walking around Ozanam handing out Popeye’s dinner coupons to those on the streets. She was very dedicated to her students - and the feeling was clearly mutual since most trips to the mall or a fast-food restaurant resulted in a hug and a chat with a current or former student. Frances was very committed to her work - neither cancer nor the worries of life stopped her from staying on duty year after year.
Frances was devoted to the Blessed Mother and to Catholic traditions - as shown by her prayers and by the many statues which she carefully positioned inside and outside the home. She also had a tradition of sending notes (and checks) to mark special occasions. Frances enjoyed using her old-school prepay cell phone and having an end-of-the-day cup of coffee and snack.
The Foley family is grateful to all the kind friends, neighbors, the nurses and staff at both Wynhoven Healthcare Center and Notre Dame Hospice and tradesmen who helped Frances and Ray so generously… especially toward the end of their lives.
In lieu of flowers - donations may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor 1655 McGill Ave. Mobile, Al 36604 or Ozanam Inn. And prayers are always appreciated.
A visitation for Frances will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2022 from 11:30am to 1:00pm at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124, followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00pm. Interment in Metairie Cemetery.
