Evelyn Barton Joseph, age 93, died peacefully in the early morning hours of June 5, 2021. She was the middle child of 5 children born to Morris and Bessie Rosenblum Barton in New Orleans, LA. As a teenager/young adult Evelyn worked in her father’s store, Rex Hats after school continuing after her high school graduation from McMain. She met and married Marvin Joseph in 1957 and had two children, Janet and Jay. Divorced in 1971 and after a brief two year stay in Monroe, Louisiana, Evelyn returned to New Orleans to begin working a Charity Hospital in the dental clinic. From there she was hired by Dr. Gerald Berenson at LSU then Tulane as his administrative assistant only retiring in her early 80’s for health reasons. She was loved and admired by all who worked with her.
Mom loved her family, near and far, and tried her best to stay in contact as often as she could. She was a devoted daughter, sister, and mother. Then there were the grandchildren, Sam, Emma, and Sophie. She loved being a grandma!
Another love was Mardi Gras! She was always in the front keeping others away so they didn’t obstruct her view or ability to catch as much as she possibly could (always for her children or grandchildren). Even when it was necessary for her to move to Woldenberg Village if a parade passed on Behrman Place she wanted to be out there in front! She also loved cooking, baking, keeping in touch with family, and playing cards with her grandchildren.
The pandemic took a great toll on mom especially due to the isolation. She is at peace now, very much missed and loved.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Pesses (Harold); son, Dr. Jay Joseph (Stacy); sister, Annette Paige; grandchildren, Sam Pailet (Rebecca), Emma Joseph, and Sophie Joseph; and sisters-in-law, Sue Barton and Sherry K. Barton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Bessie Rosenblum Barton; sister, Esther Masur; and brothers, Herbert Barton and Louis Barton.
The family would like to give special thanks to Shannon, Lakita, and Angel at Passages Hospice; everyone at Woldenberg Village Assisted Living and Nursing Home; and Linda Causey for her special care and assistance.
Graveside services will be held at Beth Israel, 4321 Frenchmen Street in New Orleans, on Monday, June 7, 2021 at 11 AM. Rabbi Joshua Pernick will officiate. In lieu of flowers please, send contributions to Beth Israel, Jewish Family Service, or a charity of your choice.
