Erwin R. Johnson, Sr., 94, passed away on August 17, 2016. He was born in New Orleans, LA. After high school he joined the Army Air Corps as an A20 Aircraft Mechanic. He was a member of the 48th Materiel Squadron, of the 27th Bomb Group (L). He was captured on Bataan, survived the Bataan Death March and was imprisoned 40 months in Camps O’Donnell, Tarloc, Cabanatuan in the Phillpine Islands and in Mukden, Manchuria via the Jap Hell Ship Tottora Maru. Upon returning home he graduated from Tulane School of Engineering and had a successful career as an engineer in New Orleans until his retirement with the Port of New Orleans. He was past president of his Kiwanis Club group. He is survived by his sons J. William (Nanette), Samuel G. (Ann), E. Raymond, and Stewart (Lorraine); grandchildren Blake, Sophia, Alexander, Samuel and Ryan Johnson; brother John K. “Spooky” Johnson (Belva) and sister Dr. Carolyn Johnson. Erwin is preceded in death by his wife Margaret S. Johnson; son Peter James Johnson, parents John Kustav and Cecile Fettet Johnson; and brother Milton Johnson. Erwin enjoyed golf and travel. He will be missed by all who knew him. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124 on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at 12:00 p.m.; followed by interment in Metairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the services beginning at 10:00 a.m.
