She was born in Oakland, California, on July 28. After earning her BA from Southern University and MA at Southeastern University, she began a career in education. She worked as an elementary school educator at Bissonet Plaza in Metairie until her retirement in 2003. Even in her retirement, she kept herself busy. She dreamed of running a B&B. Her dream came true when she opened “Chez Elle Marie”, a licensed bed and breakfast, in 2005 and ran it for 11 years.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 25 years, John S. Figaro; sister, Yolande Morant; nieces, Keeba McAllister, Jaida Thomas, Raushana Salahu-din, Andrea Morant, Yahti Wooten, and Jaida Thomas; nephews, James M. Cook and Paris S. Ervin; great nieces, Sparkle Hicks, Zoe Morant, Namaya Cook, and Marielle Thomas; and great nephews, Seven Cook and Zion Morant.
Edwina was preceded in death by parents, Eloise Cole Morant, Ovalee Morant, and Herbert H. Wooten Sr.; her sisters, Oval Rene Valentine, Johnell Morant, and Vicky Richardson; brothers, Herbert H. Wooten, Jr. and Andre Morant; and nephew, Brenton Ducote.
The family would like to give special thanks to LCMC Touro: Pulmonary Rehab, Nursing Units T8 & Q8, Passages Hospice, and her doctors, Leonard Glade and Noah Hagen.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Christian Funeral Service at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 12 PM. Visitation will begin at 11 AM. Following the chapel ceremony, she will be laid to rest in Lake Lawn Park.
