Eddie was born in New Orleans on September 6, 1946 to his father, Edward James Johnston, Sr., and mother, Marguerite Arnoult Johnston. Eddie met the love of his life, Jeanne, while playing a pinball machine. They married in 1966 and together, they raised two children: Eddie III and Scott. In 1968, Eddie began a successful career in janitorial sales and later followed his true passion of horse training. He continued to work in both careers and spent his every morning in the backstretch at the racetrack.
Eddie was known as “Pere” to his three grandchildren: Scott, Katie, and Jack. The highlight of his day was picking them up from school and taking them to their sporting events. His summers were spent planning the daily activities they could do together at Pere’s camp. At the end of the day, he always wanted the dinner table surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Eddie was an avid golfer, which allowed him to spend time with the people he cared about. Customer outings, friendly money games, and family trips to the course were some of his favorite times. Eddie always had a smile on his face and had a love for life that inspired everyone he met. His joyous presence will be missed by all who knew him.
Eddie was preceded in death by: his parents, Edward James Johnston, Sr. and Marguerite Arnoult Johnston; and his brother, Alexander H. Johnston (Vera). He is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Jeanne Saucier Johnston; his sons, Edward James Johnston, III and Scott Victor Johnston (Michelle); his sister, Lydia Vela; his brother, Paul D. Johnston (Lynn); and his grandchildren, Scott Victor Johnston, II, Katie Marie Johnston, and Jack Edward Johnston.
A celebration of Eddie’s life will be held at a later date.
