Edna Mae Chissell Grant was born on May 2, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She departed this life on Sunday, October 2, 2022 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Edna resided in Baton Rouge in her last days. Prior, she resided in Crosby, Texas, where she lived for 16 years, though she lived the majority of her life in her birthplace of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Edna Grant was the wife of the late William J. Grant; daughter of the late Lee Alice Chissell and the late David W. Chissell, Sr.; daughter-in-law of the late Fannie Mae Grant and the late William Grant; devoted mother of Satandra Babineaux of Denham Springs, Louisiana, Janine Myles of Baker, Louisiana, Deidre Derbigny of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the late Thelonious Grant of Crosby, Texas; and mother-in-law of Gentry Babineaux, Ronald Myles, Darryl Derbigny, and the late Kimberley Grant.
Eldest of her siblings, Margie Johnson, Alice Lee Berniard, David W. Chissell, Jr., Deborah Gobert, Oloando Chissell, Vondra Richardson, Lois Andrus, Simone Hawkins, Karletta Sterling, Kevin Hutchinson, and the late Melba Guichard; sister-in-law of Ernest Berniard, Sr., Lois Chissell, Maurice Gobert, Barry Richardson, the late John Johnson, Jr., the late James Guichard; additionally sister-in-law of Lawrence Grant, Dorothy Grant, Leah Willis, Leo Varnado, Evelyn Eldridge, Charles Eldridge, the late Neal Grant, the late Alvin Willis, the late Brenda Varnado, the late Charles Grant, and the late Wayne Grant.
Edna Grant also leaves behind her grandchildren, Evan Babineaux, Leland Myles, Layla Myles, and a great-granddaughter, Avery Marie Babineaux.
She is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
Born and raised in New Orleans, she attended Ricard Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1953. She worked as a cashier at Venice Garden Grocery Store, as a butcher at Circle Food Store, and as an exceptionally skilled seamstress.
Family, friends, and neighbors are invited to the visitation on Saturday, October 15th, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 4411 Congress Drive in New Orleans, Louisiana 70122 with a 12:00 noon service. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 4000 Norman Mayer Ave, New Orleans, LA 70122.
