Born August 14, 1931 in Fort Worth Texas, the only child of the late Bess Cohn and Dr. Maurice H. Cohn. She moved to New Orleans to attend Newcomb college where she graduated class of 1953. It was her junior year in college that she met the love of her life, the future Supreme Court Justice Walter F. Marcus Jr.
Barbara and Walter spent 52 wonderful years together until his death in 2004. Their marriage was full of love and togetherness. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she was a beloved matriarch whose presence and love will be missed. She was Walter’s partner in all his elections, court functions, and family life. She was proud that they never lost an election or missed a family sporting event.
Her elegance and graciousness defined her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Bamsie) Kimmell; son, Adam, B. Marcus; daughter in-law, Linda Novak; 10 grandchildren, David Kimmell, Beth Snyder, Andrew Marcus, Catherine Marcus, Stephen Marcus, Walt Marcus, Bo Marcus, Victoria Marcus, Caroline Marcus, Eli Marcus; and 6 great grandchildren.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and their son, Walter F. Marcus the 3rd.
Relatives and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend graveside services at Metairie Cemetery (use Fountain entrance) on Friday October 18, 2024 at 2pm, followed by a reception at her home.
