Ann was born April 27, 1930 in Staten Island, NY to Frank Holman Barnes and Phyllis Roberta Barnes (nee Godson). Ann grew up in New Orleans, LA, where she met and married William Preston Gardner, Jr. They moved briefly to El Paso, TX and Baltimore, MD due to her husband’s military assignments, then returned to New Orleans. They had three children, William Preston Gardner, III, Daniel (Dan) Hutson Gardner, and Jane Gardner Ohlman.
Ann and her family moved to Glenview, IL in 1963, when her husband began working for Crane Construction Co, and where they raised their children. Ann enjoyed singing in her church choir at the Glenview United Methodist Church, playing bridge, reading, gardening, travelling, working as a teller at the Glenview State Bank and working as a travel agent. She and her husband were able to enjoy many trips here and abroad.
In 1992 Ann and Bill retired to Birmingham, AL to be near their grandchildren. They became members of Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church, and, after the death of her husband, Ann became a member of Riverchase Presbyterian Church. Ann was involved in Newcomers and Encore, and enjoyed serving and attending the monthly luncheons and book club.
Ann is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, niece, nephews, sister-in-law and brother-in-law. Ann is predeceased by her parents, her brother, James William Barnes and her husband.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until service time.
