Quaker Hill- Elvina O. Larkie, 86, of Totoket Rd., died peacefully on Thursday morning, March 3, 2011 at her home with her daughters by her side. Mrs. Larkie was born on May 10, 1924 in Lakeview Township, MN, the daughter of Waldemar and Josephine Mahlberg. Her husband Joseph M. Larkie predeceased her on March 17, 1997.
Elvie's life has been one of absolute devotion to her children and with her loving hands created for them a magical childhood. With her unwavering faith in God she gently planted seeds of spiritual strength in her children to be able to see what truly matters in this world and what ultimately doesn't matter. She is that rare person for whom unconditional love is effortless. Her counsel has always been simple truth with a wisdom that surpassed even her years. She has truly lived her life by seeing and hearing with her heart because what is essential is invisible to the eyes and inaudible to the ears. She is the foundation of our family.
Mrs. Larkie is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Larkie of Quaker Hill and Robin Curtis of New London; five grandchildren, Angela and Tyee Tilghman, Ambeur and Isaiah Curtis and Jazmin Curtis-Martinez; seven great-grandchildren; a brother Roy Mahlberg of Duluth MN; a sister Sylvia Carrasco of Frederick, MD; and many nieces, nephews and friends. And most notably her two precious canine children Ching and Kandu gave her immeasurable joy in her later years.
In addition to her parents and her husband she was predeceased by her daughter Karen Larkie Tilghman on November 20, 1982.
Respecting her wishes there will be no funeral service and interment will be private. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, New London is handling the arrangements. Please visit www.fultontherouxnewlondon.com for photos, tributes and more information.
The family requests that anyone wishing to honor Elvie's life simply perform an anonymous act of kindness for someone in need or tend to the needs of a wounded animal. At a future date there will be a memorial service to celebrate her life and her eternal light.
