Brian Russell Hogan passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, October 24, 2024. He was surrounded by family at the home of his daughter, Frances Steffian, in Waterford, CT. He is survived by his wife, Carol Hogan, three children, their spouses and nine grandchildren.
Born on August 27, 1936, Brian lived a full life in and around the Boston area until moving to Manasota Key in Englewood, FL about a decade ago. Born in Norwood, MA, he grew up in Dedham, and then traveled away to attend Vanderbilt University on a Naval ROTC scholarship.
Upon graduation, he served in the Navy in Washington, DC where he also received a law degree from Catholic University. It is in Washington that he met his future wife, Carol Murray, while she was attending Trinity College. After enjoying their first year of married life on Beacon Street overlooking the Boston Public Garden, they moved to Newtonville, MA, while they built their family home in Dover where they would raise their family and develop a group of lifelong friends over 40 years.
As a registered professional engineer, Brian spent his entire career in the burgeoning environmental services industry. Brian’s passion was advancing solutions to environmental challenges, ranging from generating clean energy from various waste sources to implementing materials recycling systems. His career was highlighted by founding Resource Technology Corporation, which designed, installed, serviced and maintained on-site, waste to energy, resource recovery and recycling systems for corporate, institutional and community customers principally around New England. He was joined by his brother, Frank, and together they ran and grew the business over a three-decade period.
They lived in the Boston area for many years, which enabled them to be close to their large extended family, enriching holidays and summer vacations as the children grew up. Brian and Carol frequented the Dominican Priory and Most Precious Blood Church, both in Dover, which provided a friendly and welcoming environment that offered a social, spiritual and intellectual foundation to their family life. After their years in Dover, Brian and Carol transitioned to their vacation home on Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida which for them retains the essence of “old Florida”. It is here where they welcomed friends and family over the years.
Brian is predeceased by his parents Francis J. Hogan, Sr. and Marion Wholley Hogan and his brother Francis, Jr. (Frank). He leaves his wife Carol their three grown children, Brian, Jr., Sean and Francie. Brian, Jr. and his wife Nancy Tostanoski have four children, Brian III (and his wife Laura Slater Hogan), Colin, Maeve and Kelsy. They live in Scarsdale, NY. Sean married Jana Lee, and they have three children, Matthew, Jared and Kate. They live in Ridgefield, CT. Francie married John Steffian, and they have two daughters, Charlotte and Sarah. They live in Waterford, CT on Long Island Sound. To Brian’s delight, the family remained consistently close and supportive over the years, especially as education, careers and activities separated them geographically.
Reflecting on the arc of his life, Brian consistently valued family, education, faith and good stories. An engineer at heart, he was intellectually curious and a lifelong learner with an innovative spirit that carried through to his entrepreneurial business interests and interactions with family and friends. He lived a full and rewarding life, characterized by his engaging warmth, friendliness and inspiring words. He will be missed dearly by both family and friends.
A celebration of Brian’s life will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 at 1:00pm, followed by lunch, at The Connors Center (formerly St. Stephen’s Priory), 20 Glen Street, Dover, MA 02030.
