NEW IBERIA – Funeral services celebrating the life of George Myers, Jr. will be held at 11:00 am Friday, March 24, 2017 at Evangeline Funeral Home. Fr. Bill Melancon, Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, will officiate. Mr. George will be laid to rest with his wife, Betty Boudreaux Myers, at Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following the services.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with the Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm. Visiting hours will resume on Friday from 8:00 am until time of services.
George Myers, Jr. was born November 11, 1933 on Avery Island to the late George Myers, Sr. and May Barrilleaux Myers and passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at a Lafayette hospital with his family at his side. He was 83.
Mr. George attended New Iberia High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served as military policemen during the Korean War and was stationed in both Guam and Japan. His military experience led him to a career in law enforcement that would span decades. He joined the New Iberia Police Dept. in 1961, and then became a Louisiana State Trooper in 1964. Mr. George was assigned to Troop C in Franklin and then transferred to Troop I in Lafayette in 1973. In 1976 Mr. George was selected as Trooper of the year by the LA State Troopers Association, and was awarded Officer of the year nationally by Parade Magazine, for his heroics in saving a mother and 3 children from drowning at a pond near the Navy Base in New Iberia. He retired from the State Police in 1984, but again joined law enforcement working for former Sheriff Romo Romero until 1990.
Some of the organizations Mr. George was a member of included the LA State Troopers Association, the LA Peace Officers Association, and a 50 year member of Woodman of the World.
Survivors include son, Shane J. Myers and wife Rachel of Lafayette; his grandchildren whom he adored, Ross Joseph Myers and Taylor Angelle Myers; his sister, Gloria Myers Tullier of Scott; his God-child, Melvin “Boo” Derouen of New Iberia; and his nieces and nephews, Glenda T. Averette of Mississippi, Terry T. Burleigh of Sunset, Karen T. Ortego of Leonville, David Tullier of Bogalusa, Francis Tullier, Tressie Duhon and Lear Tullier all of New Iberia, Shawn Tullier of Jeanerette and Vanessa Bergeron of St. Martinville.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Boudreaux Myers; his sister, Janet M. Tullier; and his niece, Carole Ann McMillian.
Serving as pallbearers are Shane J. Myers, Ross J. Myers, Will and Larry Langlinais, Jude Picard and Murphy Meyers. Boo Derouen will serve as honorary pallbearer.
