COTEAU- Ellis James Labit Sr., affectionately known as "Nonk" by family and friends, age 58, of Erath, LA, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Ellis graced the Earth with his presence on July 21, 1965. He was born and raised in New Iberia, LA to his parents Laura M Landry Labit & Felton J Labit. His beautiful memories will forever live in the hearts of his only son Ellis J Labit Jr. (companion Tiffany Smith); five step grand children, Anthony, Angelo, Graceii, Cameron and Keygan; two sisters, Lori A Labit Aguilar (Luis) and Harriet McClain; two nephews, Pierre J Melancon Sr. (PJ) and Robert McClain Jr. (Bookie); niece, Alexis Aguilar (Chi-Chi);two great nieces, Angel McWilliam and Cadence King; three great nephews, Pierre J Melancon Jr., Daylon King, and Brayson Wilson; two great-great nieces; three great-great nephews; and God child, Dawn Segura.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Terry David Labit; father, Felton Labit; and mother, Laura Landry Labit.
Ellis was always a hard worker an worked several different job titles in his history of life. Of which includes Shrimper & Fishermen, Safety Man Offshore, Paramedic for Acadian Ambulance, Beekeeper, Hunter, Carpenter, Welder and Mechanic of his own. Ellis was a very easy going, get the job done kind of man. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and just being on the waters. Spending time with family or friends for cookouts and gatherings was exciting moments for him. Ellis was a very genuine, high personality guy who never met a stranger, He was known by the name of "Nonk or Nonkie" by his nieces & nephews, that carried on to others as well. He could make you laugh and brighten any room with his presence. Such a guy with a huge sense of humor!
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 am on Friday, June 14, 2024 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Coteau. Fr. Matt Hebert will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm. A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen on Friday at 8:00 am until the service time.
Pallbearers will be Pierre Melancon Sr, Pierre Melancon Jr, Alexis Aguilar, Daylon King, Luis Aguilar, and Robert Clay.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert McLain and Dawn Segura.
