Carol Ann Berges Broussard was born September 15, 1939 in New Iberia to the late George Henry Berges, Sr. and the late Mary Trahan Berges and passed away peacefully Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Iberia Medical Center. She was 79.
Carol was a 1957 Graduate of Mt. Carmel Academy and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education with a Minor in English from South Louisiana Institute (SLI) now ULL. She worked as a medical transcriptionist at the original Dauterive Hospital on Duperier Avenue for eleven years before joining her husband as the bookkeeper for their TV and stereo business, Wade’s Magnavox Home Entertainment Center. She later worked part-time with Iberia Orthopedic Group until her full retirement.
Carol dedicated her life to faith and family. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Iberia, where she received the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and Holy Matrimony. She served as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion for many years, beginning with Msgr. Guy Lemoine. She faithfully spent every morning in prayer and began each day with a blessing from her husband, Deacon Wade. When her husband was called to serve as a Deacon in the church, Carol was by his side through five years of diaconate formation. She gave her love, support and prayers for the success of her husband’s ministry as an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church for nearly 20 years.
Along with her faith was love for her family. Her children have fond memories of the many little things she did for them with meticulous care. Carol enjoyed compiling genealogy and writing family history for her children and grandchildren to know about the people and times that preceded them, which they may never know otherwise. She will be remembered for mysterious card tricks, love of her many cats that each had a name, and the beautiful poetry she wrote. She leaves a legacy of love and faith that will be cherished forever by all who knew her.
Most of all, she cherished her role as “Granny Carol” to her eleven grandchildren and making them feel special with carefully thought out gifts and treats on their birthdays and holidays. Throughout the year, she enjoyed exchanging riddles and mini-jokes with her grandchildren and singing silly songs to them when they were younger.
One of Carol’s greatest joys outside of her four children, their spouses and her eleven grandchildren, was acquiring 12 prayer partners with whom she prayed by the power of united prayer, according to Matthew 18:19-20. She was also a member of the Come Lord Jesus bible study. Her faith in God was aided by a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Wade J. Broussard, Jr.; her children, Darrell J. Broussard and friend Crystal, Glenn M. Broussard and wife Jill, Monica B. Shoemaker and husband Aaron, Greg A. Broussard and wife Jennifer; eleven grandchildren whom she adored, Hannah Marie Broussard, Victoria Grace Broussard, Zachary Michael Broussard, Kolby Matthew Broussard, Grace Ann Shoemaker, Aaron Joseph Shoemaker, Jr., Abby Rose Shoemaker, Alex James Shoemaker, Lauren Ashlynne Broussard, Madelynne Lainey Broussard and Ella Lynne Broussard; and her twin sister and brother, Mary Ann Berges Dartez and husband Leon and Arthur James Berges.
