Rebecca Mary McCabe, age 83, of New City, NY, passed away December 3, 2021, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 25, 1938, in New Rochelle, NY, to Rebecca and Morgan O’Brien. She attended Good Counsel and Katharine Gibbs School, graduated from Dominican College cum laude, and earned a Master’s Degree at St. Joseph’s Seminary. She worked at Sinclair Oil, Macy’s, St. Augustine’s Rectory, and at home where she was President and COO of McCabe Enterprises.
Rebecca was an avid reader and loved to paint. She was sweet and kind, and her patience was limitless. Her bright intelligence was matched by her sharp wit and her giggle was infectious.
She was renown for her Friday-night, homemade pizza, as well as the popcorn she gave out every Halloween. Everyone was always welcome in her home for playdates and sleepovers because in her eyes, “what’s one more?”
She would join her children on rollercoasters, was a fierce competitor in Duck Hunt and Tetris, and cheered on her kids in sports and other after-school activities whether rain or shine.
Rebecca loved being a mother to her 12 children, including their friends whom she considered her “other kids,” as well as her 15 grandchildren.
Above all, she shared a love and friendship with her late husband, Michael, that was rare. They were loyal best friends who truly enjoyed each other’s company and were inseparable for 52 years. They put each other first, gave the other support without question, and always, always made each other laugh.
Rebecca was married to her husband, Michael G. McCabe, for 50 years and is survived by 11 children Gerianne (Dan), Becky (Pat), Mary, Kathy, Peggy, Mike (Meg), Rita, Eileen (Michael), Barbara, Kevin (Kristen) and Brian; and 15 grandchildren Sean, Danny, Kate, Rachel, Erin, Timmy, Alanna, Grace, Colleen, Morgan, Mike, Gavin, Aidan, Kelly and Fiona. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Michael, and daughter, Patty. She will be missed dearly.
A wake will be held at Higgins Funeral Parlor in New City, NY, on Wednesday, December 8, at 4-8pm. The funeral mass will be held at St. Augustine’s Church on Thursday, December 9, at 10:30am. Burial will take place at 11:30am at Holy Cross Burial Park in Jamesburg, NJ, on Friday, December 10.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in memory of Rebecca McCabe.
