Maureen was born on Christmas Day, 1940 to Josephine Shortall McMahon (originally of Rathdowney, Ireland) and Michael McMahon (Originally from LaHinch, Ireland) and was raised in The Bronx, New York. She was a parishioner and graduate of Our Lady of Refuge. Maureen married the love of her life, John “Jack” Callanan in 1962 and shared nearly 50 beautiful, happy years together until he passed on March 23, 2012.
The couple settled in New City, where they raised their four children. She was the devoted mother of John Callanan (Kim), Christine Callanan McCarthy (Bob), Michael Callanan (Pamela Feick), Brian Callanan (Emily). She treasured her children and every moment with them. She especially loved being “Nana” to 14 precious grandchildren Connor, Kristi, Kayla, Kerri Ann, Kiera, Colin, Carson, Michael, Meagan, Michael, Caitlin, Jackie, Caroline, and Jack. She was always supportive, encouraging, wise, kind and so proud of them all.
Maureen was the dear sister of Joseph McMahon (Cheryl) and her three late brothers Michael McMahon (Thomas “Gil” Colovito), Vincent McMahon (Patricia), Patrick McMahon (Flavia). She will also be remembered fondly by her many beloved nieces and nephews Eileen McMahon Rose (Glenn), Kevin McMahon, Brian McMahon, Vincent McMahon (Haley), Ann Marie McMahon, Michael McMahon (Martha), Patricia McMahon Velez (Ruben), Kathleen McMahon, Stephen McMahon (Amanda), Patrick McMahon, Jeanine McMahon Longo (Pat), John McMahon (Liliana), Erin McMahon Johnson (Mike), Lynda McMahon DiMenna (Ray). Maureen was also blessed with many lifelong friends, most notably Marion and Tony Bieber who we are forever grateful to for their unending kindness and devotion.
Maureen loved any chance to spend time with her family and friends. She was known for her fun loving “detective work” and would spend hours on the phone each day gathering and relaying all the family news. She was the heart and soul of this family and she will be so missed by all that knew and loved her.
The family would like to extend their greatest and warmest gratitude to her many neighbors at Jamaica House in Pompano Beach. The love you shared as a community through countless acts of kindness, cards, meals, and good wishes was truly inspiring and uplifting. Thank you!
Mom, you have given so much and asked for so little in return. Thank you for always being there for us, for teaching us, listening to us, helping us, and always loving us unconditionally. We will work hard to honor your memory each day. Farewell, sweet Mom, until we meet again. You were simply the best.
Family and friends will gather at Higgins Funeral Home, Inc., 321 South Main Street, New City, NY on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass is on Thursday April 29, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine’s RC Church, 114 South Main Street New City, NY 10956.
