John Arthur Schunke

August 19, 1950 – December 8, 2024

John Arthur Schunke, passed away on December 8, 2024 at the age of 74. Born on August 19, 1950, John grew up in Flushing, Queens and spent the majority of his life in West Nyack, NY.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy and later dedicated his career to the New York City Fire Department, where his bravery and resilience are commended.

John had a passion for baseball his whole life. Known by many as “Coach” he coached Little League baseball and then later at St. Thomas Aquinas. He found joy and purpose in his love for the game. His fiery passion on many topics and his unfiltered personality made him a memorable person by all.

John is survived by his son, Thomas Schunke (Patricia); his daughter, Krista Mayer (Eric); and his son, Richard Schunke. He was the proud grandfather of Chase and Leah Mayer. He also loved his three cats Sam, Chance and Nicket very much.

A service to honor John’s life and will be held on Thursday, December 12th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, New York.

John Arthur Schunke’s life was as multifaceted as the man himself. He was a character who was always memorable, and deeply connected to his passions. He will be remembered by many and missed by those who knew him best.
