John Lodico, Sr. (Pop), of New City passed away on October 31, 2017 at the Joe Raso Hospice center. John had a very fulfilling life for 89 years, born on July 11, 1928. John was married to Dolores (Tapp) at Nyack Grace Episcopal Church 66 years ago.
John was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, Nick and Ronald; four sisters, Angeline, Sarah, Florence and Margie and his granddaughter, Kim Sue.
He is survived by three children- Linda (Kweon), Susan and John Jr. (Karen), 9 grandchildren- Kweon II (Debbie), Juhn (Wendy), Mikol (Kelley), Jimmy (Jessica), Tara, Thomas J., Christine, John III, Cody (Brittany), 8 great-grandchildren- Kweon III, Jolie, Caleb, Zoe, Guy, Jack, Mollie, and Harrison.
John served in the US Army and was a Korean War Veteran. After receiving a medical discharge John opted to be an electrician. After working for five years for Stanley Davidson he decided to go into business for himself and established Lodico Contracting. Between his brother-in-law (Larry Tapp) and himself they became the largest non-union company in Rockland County. In 1972 John became councilman for the Town of Clarkstown, some of his attributes while on the council were Police Commissioner, Head of the Sanitation Commission, he was an advocate of the Town of Clarkstown Recreation Department wherein he voted for Germonds Pool, purchase of Lake Nanuet, Congers Lake; pushed to get police bulletproof vests, and worked on the Palisades Mall Project.
Upon his retirement from the council he took on fighting to create the Veteran’s Memorial in Nanuet and the restoration of Dutch Gardens.
John was an excellent teacher for his trade. He taught one semester at Dominican College. John did not go to college so when he started his class he wrote his name on the board and after his name “SOHK” for his degree. The students wanted to know what degree that was and he said “School of Hard Knocks”.
He was an excellent tutor in his trade where during his electrical career he had many employees, eight of which went into their own business.
John will be waked at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 S. Main St., New City on Saturday, November 4 from 2-7pm. His funeral service will be held at the Nyack Grace Episcopal Church on First St. in Nyack on Monday, November 6 at 11am. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.
