John E. Downey

John Edward Downey peacefully entered eternal rest on November 29, 2019 with his family was by his side. John was born January 27, 1931 and raised in Niagara Falls, NY to John and Rita Downey before relocating to New City. John headed the Finance Department at Ciba-Geigy for 25 years prior to his retirement. He enlisted in the Air Force after high school, during the Korean War, and he was Honorably Discharged. John loved to be involved. He stayed active with his beloved Korean War Veterans at the post in New City. John also volunteered his time with the Clarkstown Soccer Club back in the 1970's. Little did he know his involvement would continue for 43 years, a GREAT 43 years.

His love of reading, travel and service will live on in our hearts forever. John always lovingly spoke of his children and how proud he was stating to everyone “I have five great kids”. He is survived by his sister Jacqueline Miller, his three sons, Timothy M. Downey, Kevin J. Downey, John P. Downey, and two daughters Lynn M. (Downey) Walz and Suzanne R. (Downey) Caliguiri. He is further survived by five grandchildren Dylan and Conner Walz and Danielle and Kailtin Breda and Erin, Benjamin, and Aiden Caligiuri. He was pre-deceased by his loving parents and sister Peggy Hutton.

Visitation will be Wednesday December 4th from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday December 5th at St. Augustine’s Church in New City, NY at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.
