Joan T. McCullagh of New City, New York passed away peacefully on January 18 surrounded by her loving family. Known simply as “Joanie” by all who loved her, she was born January 1, 1933 in the Bronx, NY where she lived the first 40 years of her life. She met the love of her life John (Jack) McCullagh and was married in 1955. They spent 51 loving years married until Jack’s death in 2006. Joan and Jack raised six children in the Bronx until they moved to Rockland County in late 1972. Joan is survived by her sister Kitty of Virginia and five sons and one daughter: John, Brian, Madeline (Wiebicke), David, Raymond, and James. She was taken care of in her later years by her children and their spouses (Laurel, Denise, Randy, Lisa, Terri and Emily), whom she loved deeply, and Bernie, Sue and Margaret who were the most amazing caregivers. Joan had 18 grandchildren that all adored their ‘Grandma Joanie” and 6 great grandchildren. Although she left the Bronx almost 50 years ago, it never left her as she maintained the street smarts and feistiness that somehow perfectly complemented one of the most loving and caring people to walk this earth. She will be missed by all who knew her, but all are so happy that she gets to be reunited with her beloved Jack in a better place.
A wake will be held at Higgins Funeral home in New City, NY on Monday January 20th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Augustine’s Church in New City on Tuesday January 21st at 10am. Internment to follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Nanuet, NY.
In lieu of flowers to donate to Joe Raso Hospice residence in Joanies name.
