Elizabeth Susanna Harmsen (Bettie) went home to our Heavenly Father on December 21, 2016 at 7:47 pm after a fierce battle with cancer. Bettie was born in Zimbabwe on May 30, 1966 to missionary parents, Roelof and Ina Buitendag. An accomplished athlete, she graduated from Stellenbosch University with a B.Sc Honors in Medical Biochemistry. She had a stellar career in the pharmaceutical industry, of which the past 22 years were with Pfizer, first in South Africa and then in the USA. A brilliant woman with an infallible thirst for God and a perpetual “can-do attitude”, she was appreciated for her leadership and her commitment in all areas of her life. She will be remembered for her integrity, empathy and determination. Bettie was valiant and optimistic. She found happiness in the simple things in life and fully embraced the journey of faith. As a treasured Sunday school teacher at Risen King Alliance Church she touched many hearts. Her Christian faith was an inspiration to those around her. She was a loving daughter, a model sibling, a caring aunt to her nieces and nephews and a friend of the most rare sort. Bettie is survived by her siblings: Louisa, Jan, Roeline. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Hans and her cherished children Mikaela and Joshua. Bettie will always remain in our hearts. The viewing will held be on Friday, December 23, 2016 from 4pm –6pm followed by a funeral service at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City, New York. Memorial contributions in Bettie’s honor may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
