Retired Clarkstown Police Sergeant
Benjamin J. Albertson of Valley Cottage, NY passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024. He was 94 years old.
Benjamin was born in New York City on May 6, 1930, to Benjamin H. and Jane A. (Murray) Albertson. He moved to Congers in 1947 and attended Congers High School. On May 3, 1952, he married Dorothy McDonnell at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Congers, NY. He was predeceased by Dorothy in 1996 after 44 happy years of marriage.
Benjamin served the Clarkstown Police Department for 29 years, retiring in 1992 with the rank of Sergeant. During his tenure, he received several awards for meritorious police service.
Prior to joining the police, he worked for Continental Can. Co. and General Foods Corp.
He served in the 50th Armored Division of the New Jersey National Guard, where he received an honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Benjamin was a gregarious and community-oriented man who, through the course of his life, held many volunteer positions. He was a Charter Member and a former Assistant Captain of the Congers-Valley Cottage Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which was founded in 1965. He held numerous offices with the Congers 1 Senior Citizens Club and was an instructor at SeniorNet Computer Learning Center at Meals on Wheels. He was also a former member of the John Cardinal McCloskey Council 4565, New City.
In 2012, he was chosen as Clarkstown Senior Citizen of the Year.
He is survived by his three daughters: Mrs. Jane Barwenko and her husband, Hans, of Kissimmee, FL; Mrs. Barbara Rambin and her husband, Joseph, of Suffern, NY; and Mrs. Maureen Campanelli and her husband, Gregory, of Stony Point, NY; as well as eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend and companion, Leatrice Fleckenstein of Congers, NY.
Visitation will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home at 113 Lake Road, Congers, NY on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 3:00-7:00 pm.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Congers, NY at 10:00am. An interment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Rockland Lake Rd. Congers NY
