Edward Senk was born on July 24, 1925, at his home at 350 Washington St. in New Britain, CT. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart School and attended New Britain High School until 1943, when he was accepted into the Aviation Cadet Training Program, a branch of the US Army Air Force. Edward completed his aviation training and was posted to Ansbach, Germany where he served until 1949. While in Germany, Edward met and married his wife Helga (Blumel) Senk and celebrated the birth of his first child, Charlotte. His other five children were born in New Britain.
Upon returning from military service, Edward attended the Veterans High School in Hartford, CT. He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Connecticut, and in 1960, Edward completed a graduate degree in banking from Brown University.
Edward’s professional career was in banking. From 1955-1960, Edward was employed by the People’s Savings Bank in New Britain, CT as a teller and then as assistant auditor. After completion of his graduate degree, he worked for Ernst and Ernst as an accountant. From 1963 to 1977, Edward was employed by the Burritt Mutual Savings Bank and served as auditor, fiscal officer and Assistant Vice-President. From 1978 until his retirement in 1987, Edward was employed as an auditor with the National Savings Bank in New Haven, CT, which later merged with Peoples Bank.
In addition to his work in the banking industry, Edward was an active member of Sacred Heart Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, and for many years provided voluntary financial services and auditing for the Sacred Heart Church Bazaar. Along with his wife Helga, Edward was also a pre-marital counselor for the Family Life and Marital Enrichment (FLAME) program at the Church.
Edward and his wife Helga retired to Charlestown, RI and enjoyed their home there until 2003, when they moved to Rocky Hill, CT to be closer to family. After Helga’s passing in 2004, Edward moved to The Greenwood Center in Sanford, ME.
Edward was a loving and devoted husband and an attentive, playful and caring father and grandfather. He is survived by his six children, Charlotte Bartizek and her husband Ron of Dallas, PA, Barbara Sutcliffe and her husband Lawrence Furbish of Sanford, ME, Lenore Martin and her husband Paul of Chapel Hill, NC, Robert Senk and his wife Deb of Burlington, CT, Paul Senk and his wife Jane of Amherst, NH and Debbie Friday and her husband Charlie of Rocky Hill, CT. He leaves twelve grandchildren, Katie and Carl Bartizek, Diana and Andrea Sutcliffe, Emily, Hannah and Clara Martin, Greg and Melanie Senk, Amanda Senk, and Nathan and Jared Friday.
Calling hours are from 5-8 pm on Sunday, March 14th, at the New Britain Memorial & Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Avenue, New Britain (directions: Exit 37 off I-84 take a right at the exit, 1 ½ miles on your right.) Funeral services will be on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 9:15 am at New Britain Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church.
