Upon graduation from New Braunfels High School he enlisted in the Army National Guard and attended Draughon Business College.
After being discharged from the National Guard he met and married Barbara Holcomb Wenzel in 1963. In 1965 they had a son, Tim.
He loved telling people the story about how his family arrived from Germany on the ship Brig. Johann Dethardt in November of 1844 for the founding of New Braunfels, Texas. It was a 30 day journey from Germany to Galveston and then another 90 days to make it to New Braunfels due to wagon breakdowns, dishonest guides, and other hardships the settlers faced. He loved to share the fact that his great grandfather’s gravestone has a seal from The Republic Of Texas.
He worked as a sales rep for chemical supply companies throughout his career, but forming his own small business was his pride and what he loved the most. On May 11, 1972 he was out of town on a business trip when he decided to end his trip early because of bad weather. After coming home for only a few hours a flash flood swept through Bleiders Creek and into the Landa Estates where they lived. He never panicked, instead he carried his son and held onto his wife while trying to wade through chest deep water to find safety and higher ground. Only to find a pecan tree at the corner of Klingemann and Union St. The family stayed in the tree for hours until they were rescued by firefighters. Without him coming home early from that trip there would have been two more fatalities associated with the flood for sure.
He was an avid outdoorsman since childhood who loved to hunt and fish, and he loved teaching those skills to his son. When he wasn’t hunting or fishing, he loved to work in his yard taking care of the landscaping and clearing brush and trimming trees. He simply loved being outside.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, son Tim, and daughter-in-law Patricia.
Services will be private for family.
