Joseph Herring

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Joseph (Joe) Isreal Herring, age 70 of New Braunfels, Texas announces his passing on Friday, October 9, 2020. He was born on December 25, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas, to Joseph Isreal Herring Sr. from Louisiana and Lola Mae Herring from San Antonio, Texas. He was the only boy of 5 children. He is survived by his loving wife, Celecia Herring of New Braunfels. His sons Joel Esmele and wife Celia, Jerry Esmele and wife Lisa, Mark Cabides, and daughter Maria Wooten and husband James; grandchildren, Dalton, Kendall, Mahealani, Adaline and Mackenzie. He is also survived by his sisters Anna Mattoon, Nita Spivey and husband Lynn, Lena Daugherty and husband Bill, Leila Fannon, and many nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his parents Joseph Sr. and Lola Herring.

Joe graduated from New Braunfels High School class of 1968. He studied Architecture at Texas A&M University after two years he joined the United States Navy. He began his career at Recruit Training Command Company 30 in Orlando, FL from February 1971-May 1971. After he went onto train at Radio Man “A” School Naval Training Center in BainBridge, MD from May 1971-August 1971. Then he was stationed to do Navcommsta in Ponce, Puerto Rico from August 1971-October 1974. Then back to the states to train at Radio Man “B” Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA from October 1974-May 1975. After he went onto do Navcommsta in Japan from May 1975-May 1977. Then to Diego Garcia B.I.O.T from May 1977-June 1978. After Diego Garcia he was stationed at the Naval Telecommunication Center in Nimitz Hill, Guam from June 1978-December 1980. Then he went back to San Diego, CA as an Instructor for Radio Man “A” School Naval Training Center from December 1980-January 1984. He went to Teletype Repair School Naval Training Center from January 1984-May 1984. From there he was assigned to USS Proteus (AS-19) in Guam from January 1984-June 1988. After that he was stationed at Naval Radio Transmitting Facility CAPAS, TARALAC, in the Republic of Philippines from June 1988-January 1991. During that time he married his wife Celecia, and was happily married for 30 years. Before retiring he went onto Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station in Western Pacific, Guam from January 1991-September 1992. After 21 years of service he retired as Radioman First Class Petty Officer. He moved back home to New Braunfels with his wife to raise their four children. He then went to work for the San Antonio Express News retiring after 20+ years with the company.

Joe, Papa Joe or Papa to most was a man who worked hard for his family. Dedicated yet simple man that was always there when you needed him. He will be missed deeply and we will keep his memories with us, until we meet again.
