Jay was born and raised in Houston and spent his childhood with many friends as well as summers at the bay with cousins from the Mulvey, Bogar and Braniff families. He attended St. Anne Catholic School, St. Thomas High School (class of 1963) and University of St. Thomas (class of 1967). He served as UST Student Body President his senior year at the University. He then accepted a commission as a Lieutenant in the US Navy and was the supply officer on the USS Terrebonne Parish (LST 1156) out of Little Creek VA. He was awarded the Blue E for excellence and efficiency and was selected to serve as an instructor at the US Naval Base in Athens, GA from 1970-1972. He and his former spouse Patricia Warren Mulvey returned to Houston and started a family with their two daughters Erin and Meredith. He entered the restaurant business after his naval service and eventually enjoyed partnering in ownership of the Stables Restaurants where he made many friends and employed a great team of people. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Pilant Lake Hunting Club. He spent many days enjoying duck hunting and camaraderie with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Margaret Mary Silman. He is survived by his daughters Erin Mulvey Hader (married to Matthew) and Meredith Mulvey Gowens (married to Geoff); former spouse Patricia Warren Mulvey; grandsons Luke Hader, Aidan Gowens and John Paul Gowens; brother Patrick Bogar Mulvey (married to Susan); nephews and nieces James Silman, Christopher Silman, Kimberly Mulvey Benjamin, Patrick Bogar Mulvey, Jr., Noelle Warren Rodgers and their families, as well as many cousins and great-nephews and great-nieces.
He spent his last years at Brookdale in the Heights and the family is thankful for the care and kindness he received there. He loved snacks and watching lots of sports on TV and would always cheer for Houston’s teams despite their years of disappointment.
