The Pirtle family moved from Del Rio to Brackettville, TX when he and his identical twin, Almer Floyd (Colorado Springs, CO) were 4 years old. They lived and grew up there attending school until they were 16. Shortly after High School, Lloyd joined the Army, but not before Lloyd married Geraldine Dee Schrier. Lloyd was sent to El Paso, TX for boot camp, then stationed in Okinawa for the first couple of years of their married lives. While Lloyd was overseas, Gerri stayed in Corpus Christi and finished her High School education and received her diploma. After Lloyd returned from overseas, they settled in Corpus Christi and started their family. In 1965, the family bought and moved to 1-1/4 acres of land near Odem, TX, where Lloyd built their first home.
Lloyd and Gerri had 3 children - Laura Ann Dokken (Greg) of New Braunfels, TX, Lloyd Allen Pirtle (Sandra) of Winnsboro, TX, and Leigh Aubrey Pirtle. They have 3 Grandchildren & 4 Great Grandchildren.
Lloyd had many hobbies over the years, collecting guns, carving intricate custom gunstocks, following/watching football and singing in church, weddings and funerals. Lloyd had a beautiful singing voice and shared this with thousands over his lifetime. His passion was hunting which primarily involved bird and deer hunting. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Aggies and never willingly passed up an opportunity to watch a game. Lloyd was a devout Christian and served as a Deacon and Elder at the Odem Church Of Christ. Lloyd also had a reputation for being able to “outeat” anyone and everyone. He and his Army buddies were dubbed (not by accident), “Pirtle and his chosen few.”
Lloyd always worked extremely hard in his lifetime and didn’t shirk responsibilities whether at work or at home. He abided by the philosophy “Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.” Lloyd worked for Lewis Boggus Ford in Corpus Christi, TX for about 5 years and Texas Industries in Corpus Christi, TX, where he was employed for 25 years. He worked a second job at home as a mechanic and autobody technician where he bought and sold automobiles. He had a reputation for “getting things done” no matter what it took. After leaving TXI, he and Gerri moved from Odem, TX to New Braunfels TX, where he accepted a role at Parker Brothers followed by a different role at Gifford Hill (DFW), which moved them to Duncanville, TX. After a short-duration project in Tucson, AZ, Lloyd and Gerri moved back to New Braunfels, TX, where Lloyd worked for a short time and officially retired. After retirement, Lloyd and Gerri moved to Brackettville, TX, and enjoyed a decade of traveling the lower 48 in a travel trailer, as well as, traveling Alaska, Mexico and parts of Europe.
Family and friends were always most important to Lloyd and he enjoyed getting together. He was very generous with his time and found it hard to say no to someone in need. He was polite and thoughtful and always willing to lend someone a hand. When he was with friends or family, Lloyd was always smiling and laughing, which was infectious to those around him. He loved life and possessed a “never give up” spirit.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents Hal Jasper and Lillie Mae, son Leigh Aubrey, sister Helen Irene Calk, sister Margaret Lee Jones, brother Hal Edgar Pirtle and sister Patsy Ann Miller.
