Walter graduated from Jasper High School in 1958 and was a senior class favorite. He started his career building boats with Bobby Matthews before moving on to work at the New Bern shipyard. He spent the remainder of his career focused on diesel repair as he worked at Morgan Engine Company and finally to his career destination with Heavy Duty Truck and Diesel Repair. Walter worked alongside his brother, Ralph Jr. and eventually became the sole owner of the company in 1977 providing invaluable service for many years sharing his diesel mechanic expertise.
In addition to his lengthy and successful career, Walter devoted himself to a lifetime of service to both his country and community. This was exemplified by his 30 years of service in the Army National Guard. Walter was an active member of the Ionic Lodge #583 in Cove City, the Lenoir County Shrine Club, and a faithful, dedicated member of the Sudan Cart Caravan. Walter was also a long-time member of Asbury Community Methodist Church serving in various capacities. He enjoyed spending his free time fishing, enjoying his collection of vintage cars, and watching Nascar racing; though Walter’s greatest achievement was his devotion to his family. He was an excellent husband, father, and grandfather and he treasured time spent with his family. He enjoyed socializing, “cutting up” with friends, and never met a stranger.
