David was born in Paris, Kentucky in 1949 and was raised in New Bern, NC from the age of four years old. David served as a MP in the Vietnam War from 1970-1973, operating in joint undisclosed USAF/US Army forward air control (FAC) locations in Vietnam and Laos from 1972 until he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1973. Upon his return home, David began a nearly fifty-year career as a master carpenter, general contractor and entrepreneur, always chasing a dream of a new adventure. Among his businesses were Pine Box Furniture Company (Raleigh, NC), a candy store, general contractor in Raleigh, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC, and master trim carpenter. David had a passion for fun, and enjoyed jeeps, four wheelers, boats, shag dancing, and accumulating any new tool that became available.
David was tirelessly dedicated to his family. He was preceded in death by his father, James B. Stocks. Surviving are his wife, Sharon Shiver Stocks of New Bern; daughters, Katherine Bryan Thompson (Will) and Elizabeth Baker Sharpe (Derek), both of Apex, NC; step-sons, Tyler Ahrendsen (Sharifa) of Raleigh and Timothy Ahrendsen of Chapel Hill; mother Ruth Vogelpohl Stocks of New Bern; grandchildren, Bailey, Dayton, Riley, and Sutton; siblings, Jeffrey Lynn Stocks (Antoinette) of Gaffney, SC and Karen Stocks Connor (Wade) of New Bern; 3 nieces and nephews; and his two dogs, Kirby and Shelby.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Broad Street Christian Church at 1:00 pm on Friday August 23, 2019 (802 Broad Street, New Bern, NC), with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in David’s name to Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org).
