He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karen, one son, Anthony Farthing, two daughters, Leslie Wyatt and Lori Beebe, two brothers, C.V. Farthing and Richard Farthing, and three sisters, Linda Watlington, Billie Rae Foster and Carolyn McNeely. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer.
Master Chief Farthing served on active duty in the US Navy from 1962 to 1990 with honor and distinction. After enlisting in the Navy with the rank of Recruit, he achieved promotions to the highest enlisted rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. As a dedicated Navy Hospital Corpsman, he served his fellow Sailors and Marines on the rolling and pitching decks of destroyers and frigates in the oceans of the world and in the most sophisticated Naval Hospitals. Throughout his entire career, Master Chief Farthing, or "Doc Farthing" as he was known to his shipmates earned the respect of his seniors, contemporaries and subordinates because of caring and concern. He was the "go to" man who could solve a medical problem, provide counseling or just befriend a lonely young Sailor or Marine. He was a man of honor who earned trust through professional competence. He received many awards including Navy Commendation medal and Navy Achievement medal.
His memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, December 3, 2021 at Cotten Funeral Home.
