Michael was born June 29, 1940 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to Ronald and Freda. He attended Lunenburg Academy and Rothesay Collegiate School were he excelled in athletics, especially track, football and hockey, as well as being a part of many social clubs.
He started at National Sea Products (NSP) in 1961 working in sales in Boston and Toronto, then transferred to Maine in 1968. He worked his way up at NSP from Sales Manager to finally General Manager and Vice President of the Northern Processing Division in 1982. He left there to start his own seafood wholesale distribution business SeaWise Inc in 1992, where he worked until his retirement. Michael was very well known and respected in the seafood industry.
Michael was very active in the community as President of the Camden Outing Club, President of the Snow Bowl Jr Ski Racing Club, President of the Seafood Distributors Association of America and Director of the National Fisheries Institute.
Michael enjoyed golf and was also a voracious reader. He learned to sail on the wooden sloop, the Curlew and continued sailing on Penobscot Bay on his J30, the Peregrine. Michael loved skiing at the Camden Snow Bowl and helping his children develop their racing skills there.
Michael is survived by his former wives, Marilyn Smith of Maine and Lynne Wise Smith of New Hampshire; his sons Joseph Smith (Jennifer) of Vermont and Christian Callahan (Kate) of New Hampshire; his daughters Stephanie Phelps (Rick) of Vermont and Anita Watkins (Simon) of Colorado; his brother Peter Smith (Lydia) of Nova Scotia; his grandchildren Emily, Eric, Harper, Spencer, Cooper, Ella and Grace.
Michael will be buried with his beloved dog Chloe.
